IN THIS MASTERPIECE ON THE WORD OF GOD, Psalm 119, the poet said, "My tongue shall speak of thy word" (verse 172). Concerning its efficacy, here are eleven distinct functions:
Cleanses: "Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed..to thy word" (verse 9). Guards against sin: "Thy word have I hid in my heart, that I might not sin against thee" (verse 11). Counsels: "Thy testimonies also are my delight, and my counselors" (verse 24).Gives hope: "Remember the word..upon which thou hast caused me to hope" (verse 49). Quickens: "Thy word hath quickened me" (verse 50). Puts a song in the heart: "Thy statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage" (verse 54). Makes wise: "Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemises...my teachers...the ancients" (verses 98-100). Feeds the soul: "How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth" (verse 130). Gives light: "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path" (verse 105). Gives joy:"Thy testimonies...a heritage for ever...they are the rejoicing of my heart" (verse 111). Provides the only infallible way: "I esteem all thy precepts concerning all things to be right" (verse 128) (A Psalm In My Heart; Leroy Browlow)
"He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments and live. Proverbs 4:4"
